Tatt-itude isn't new, and in fact has always been around in lesser doses and degrees in tattoo parlours and studios that just don't get " it ". Sadly though, this bad attitude has spread, and I think reality TV may have been the No. 1 culprit.
You see friends .....TV has told a lot of people that tattooing is an easy living. Good laughs, easy sex, piles of cash and adoring fans that will treat you like a Rock Star. "Yeah dude" ...... you just have to look the part, and act like the world owes you a fucking living.
Because that's what's on the Tattoo shows on cable TV. In fact, the massive boom in tattoo popularity (and all the fly by night tattoo shops that came with it) can all be pretty much traced back to ground zero...when Miami Ink first hit the airwaves in July 2005.
Everybody gotta be Famous, Fabulous and First in line.... Dude.
And that kind of shallow bullshit has even spread into what were once very good tattoo studios, where serious, professional and approachable artists used to be the norm.
Tatt-itude....it's a problem. Know the symptoms. Stamp it out.
Maybe you've encountered Tatt-itude before? Maybe you were a newcomer to tattoo culture and were looking around for your first artist ..... only to receive rude sniping from the front counter staff when you asked a question?
Perhaps you were a long term client of a studio or artist, and then you started to feel like you were getting the shaft on the price you were paying for the time actually being spent on you as compared to the tattooist's social life / texting / smoke breaks?
Maybe you came in for a consultation, with your ideas for the artist to consider, only to be flatly and beligerently told that they thought it was stupid, or a waste of time or somehow beneath them? They weren't even prepared to offer you any suggestions?
Maybe you had put down a huge deposit 3 months ago ... and patiently and shyly checked in with the artist every 3 or 4 weeks or so ...... and still not even a napkin sketch to show you for your trouble?
And maybe worst of all .... after having waited weeks for your appointment day to arrive ....... did the artist pull a no show or a last minute cancellation with no reasonable excuse or decent apology?
Maybe that happened on more than one occasion?
Friends, that shit is happening all over Tattooland. Everyday.
So what does that have to do with us at Pagan Tattoo Edmonton? Well, the really short answer is "We're not like those guys".
However, if you've got this far along in my little essay here, you've probably figured out that short answers aren't my strong suit ........ and I have some stuff to tell you.
Look, we the artists at Pagan are creative people, and we don't think in a straight line like bankers or insurance salesmen or policemen. We can be quirky, geeky, even a little flakey, weird and whimsical. That's part of what makes an artist unique.
But this is not a pageant to see who's the most absolutely fabulous, self important ink slinger ....... it's our bloody job. It's our profession. It comes with expectations and responsibilities. And at Pagan Tattoo we "get" that.
You see, tattooing is a really unique and special art form. IT'S ON HUMAN CANVAS! A tattoo becomes part of the identity of the person who wears it. That's heavy stuff. It is essential that a tattooist takes real care to do the best for his or her client. That's ethically important. That's spiritually important.
That's why every good tattoo experience begins with a good consultation process. That's where we get together and talk through your ideas and ours and see if we can get on the same page about your tattoo project. It's about establishing a relationship. Establishing TRUST that goes both ways.
We're going to work on this thing together. You bring us an idea that you see in your mind's eye, or maybe it's a thing you feel you want to communicate to the world about yourself. Maybe getting a tattoo is the way you want to remember someone important. And yes, regardless of what TV has told you.... it is 100% acceptable to get a tattoo just because you like the picture. Not every tattoo has to be rooted in deep personal meaning to be appropriate.
Love art. Live art. Embrace it.
And so yes, our job begins with your ideas, and we want you to trust in our long and vast experience in tattooing to create something for you that will not only be pleasing to look at, but be timeless, powerful and completely right for you and your body and your lifestyle.
How do we do that? We research the best reference material to aid our drawing process. We consult with each other in the shop on our current projects.
We deeply understand tattoo history and the various styles that have emerged over the centuries. Also, we look at the current trends, but take only what is useful, and discard the rest for the tattoo fashionistas to fawn over.
So often now, in this very bloated tattoo industry, we see scores of reasonably talented tattooists all trying to turn out work that looks like everybody else's. Boring.
Not here at Pagan Tattoo Edmonton. Each one of our group has a unique set of style traits that will contribute to giving you one of a kind, "stand out from the herd" tattoo.
We use top quality pigments and products and stay current on techniques and procedures. We care about making you comfortable, safe and relaxed. We show up for work on time, well rested and sober.
We don't wanna be Rock Stars.
At Pagan Tattoo .... we just wanna Rock.
